Broomstick crochet was something I've been keen to try for a while now. I saw my lovely friend @hkgal making scarf and loved the stitch. Yesterday I started to wrestle with the broomstick! And wrestle it was.... 25mm knitting needles are not easy to manipulate and keep your tension correct.
I used Drops Big Merino that is an Aran weight. It has a lovely texture and is quite stretchy, which I thought would make removing the loops easier. It was easier, much easier than the Stylecraft acrylic I'd tried earlier.
Initially my work looked like a bag of intestines, making me glad that I'd not chosen pink yarn. ☺ It did improve and as the piece got longer the pattern became more apparent.
So here are my attempts. I have to admit that I started to remove all the loops from the broomstick and then crochet them. It was faster but that doesn't mean it was correct or gives the right effect. Yet again we'll wait and see.
This piece takes off loops in groups of 4 with dc and then a row of trebles is worked between.
This sample is plain broomstick removing loops in 4s. It would make a lovely scarf in a 4ply. I think a really drapey fabric could be achieved.
Finally I redid my bars and lacets filet crochet anticipating that it would be more square. It isn't! I've ordered some blocking boards in the hope it might make a difference. The stitching and motif is fine it's just the shape. Watch out blocking boards here we come.
